Gilbert and Sullivan Society Sixteenth Convention
The 16th Gilbert and Sullivan Convention 2007 took place
at the Alma Lodge Hotel, Stockport,
near Manchester, April 13/14/15 2007
Friday
The celebration dinner was opened by the Manchester
Gilbert and Sullivan Chairman, Mr David Walton,

There was an entertaining speech Mr. John Ayldon,

a Manchester Vice-President.
after the dinner
Mr. Geoffrey Shovelton, another Vice-President,

entertained us with song and story accompanied by
Mr. David Mackie
Saturday
After the introduction and welcome by Manchester Society
Chairman
David Walton.
We had an enlightening talk by the Revd Dr Ian Bradley.
After being suitably refreshed we reassembled to a talk
entitled
"Parody and 'Aesthetic Sham' in Sullivan's Music"
given in flamboyant style by
Professor Derek Scott,

Professor of Critical Musicology at Leeds University.
.
After lunch we split for one of
"Costuming Gilbert and Sullivan Operas for
the Amateur Stage".

Elizabeth Menezes (soprano), Camilla Cutts
(mezzo), David Menezes (tenor), Carl Donohue (baritone)
and Giles Davies (baritone),
with David Mackie at the piano.
The convention last day started with
'Sullivan on Sunday '
(with some Gilbert)
led by John Balls and Ian Bradley
This was followed after coffee with an
Any Questions Session
with David Walton in the chair
The convention was hosted by the
Manchester Gilbert and Sullivan Society
and
Norwich Gilbert and Sullivan Society
