GILBERT & SULLIVAN SOCIETY

MANCHESTER    (Founded 1932)

Dear member                                                                                                     July 2008

“Hearty greeting offer we!”  I hope you will consider the enclosed programme of meetings attractive and varied and will enjoy the magazine.  I think (hope) the programme card is self explanatory, so will not repeat information.  If you would like to know more about any evening beforehand do please ring me or another committee member.  I do hope that we will have good attendances – please note that the November and January meetings are on Sunday afternoons, and we have avoided a date early in January as it seems that many people are still away then.  We know it is difficult to find suitable parking in central Manchester!: please contact me if you would like a list of suggested car parks and the prices.

You will see that some members of Sale G&S Society will entertain us in October.  You may like to know that on the Sunday evening before that, ie Sunday 28th September, Alistair Donkin will give a concert at the Garrick Theatre, Altrincham, supported by Sale G&S Society.  The programme will be different from the one they give us.

If you have not yet paid your subscription, £15.00 (or £7.50 for junior / student), please send it to our Treasurer, Wilf DeakinOur year starts in April so yours is due unless you paid at the AGM or since April 7th.  Only paid up members will be sent the next mailing.  Cheques payable to The Gilbert & Sullivan Society, Manchester.

Following the donation of our library to the Henry Watson Music Library in Central Library, Manchester, there will be a talk at the Library in September.  It will be given by David Walton, Ray Walker and Chris Browne one Wednesday lunch-time in mid September and will last about 45 minutes.  Whilst it is aimed mainly at non-members and potential ones, you are very welcome to attend.  Please ring me or any of the speakers to find out the date and time.

Remember also that you can order G&S and other theatrical goods from our member Chris Browne, who buys and sells memorabilia.  see his online catalogue: www.gilbertandsullivanonline.com.

The Fifteenth International G&S Festival at Buxton will run for three weeks from Saturday August 2nd to Saturday 23rd.  Full programme of the many delights by day and in the evening, and booking; Buxton Opera House tel 01298 72190.  Our Society’s contribution to the daytime programme will be on Tuesday August 19th at 2.30 pm; Celebrity Any Questions.  I don’t know yet which celebrities will appear but we plan to have a team of four.  The meeting will be chaired by our member John Coates and a good number of questions have been sent in by some of you, for which, many thanks.

Apart from our afternoon it is difficult to know which Festival items to pick out and recommend.  The professional performances are always excellent.  This year they are Mikado, Gondoliers and Iolanthe.  Opera Della Luna will perform Parson’s Pirates and HMS Pinafore.  The amateur performances are of a remarkably high standard.  For daytime there is a wonderful choice of instructive sessions and entertainment.  I do recommend the Festival; it is really enjoyable.

The concert we know as the Magic of G&S featuring members of the original D’Oyly Carte Opera Company will be on Sunday 28th December at 3.00 pm.  I think it has a different title this year.  Details including cast list are on the Bridgewater Hall website.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Buxton, and of course in October.

Best wishes      Jean      Jean Dufty (Secretary)
